As
far as recent horror films as of late go, Andre Ovredal's The
Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) is definitely near the top of the
list. While not perfect, the film has some effective scares and well
developed characters including stunning performances by Brian Cox
(Michael Mann's Manhunter) and Emile Hirsch. Following his
other well received genre film Troll Hunter (2010), Ovredal
proves he has effective visual storytelling skills and certainly
shows an improvement in his style.
The
film also stars Olwen Catherine Kelly, Opehlia Lovibond, and Michael
McElhatton.
When
a mysterious body of a Jane Doe is found at a vicious crime scene,
police bring the body into the Tilden Morgue where a Father (Cox) and
a Son (Hirsch) are the caretakers. While the two men begin their
autopsy of the body to find the cause of death, they soon realize
that this corpse is far different from the rest. Soon, a bizarre and
disturbing chain of events start to unravel, leaving nobody safe from
Jane Doe - who may be both alive AND dead.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and
a great sounding, lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track, the
film looks and sounds vividly creepy on Blu-ray disc with rich
stylized cinematography with high contrast tones that bright out the
special effects. The soundtrack is creepy and effective as well,
with several moments that will make you jump.

Aside
from a cat dying (a pet peeve of mine that I HATE during movies
because I'm quite fond of them), I really liked The Autopsy of
Jane Doe. It's original, has great performances, and realistic
special effects to boot. I would definitely suggest it.
