The
Space Between Us (2017/Universal Blu-ray w/DVD)

The
Space Between Us (2017) is a fish out of water romantic sci-fi
film that sports an interesting concept and isn't just for a young
audience. Featuring a well-rounded cast including Asa Butterfield,
Gary Oldman, Carla Gugino, Britt Robertson, and BD Wong, the film is
similar to others in its genre such as the superior comedy Blast
From The Past (1999), where an unlikely romance is formed between
two very different people seemingly from two different backgrounds,
that find equal ground and fall in love despite many trying to keep
them apart.
Well
shot with impressive special effects, the film spans the course of
nearly two decades as it begins with an astronaut who lands on Mars
with a NASA team and is discovered that she is pregnant a bit too
late. Having her baby on the foreign planet and dying during child
birth, the team back on earth (led by Oldman) decide to keep the
child's birth a secret in an attempt to protect the integrity of the
mission. Sixteen years later, Gardner (Butterfield) is growing wary
on the planet as he starts talking to a girl on earth named Tulsa
(Robertson) - an outsider on her planet as well. Destined to meet
his birth father and the girl of his dreams, Gardner ends up on Earth
and adjusts to life on his home planet while falling in love for the
first time.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.39:1 and
a nice sounding DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 7.1 lossless track that is
up to standards with Blu-ray presentations. There are many great
locations in the film and the detail on the characters is pretty
intricate with little to complain about in terms of transfer, but
could be improved with a 4K UHD transfer.
Also
included is a standard definition DVD of the film with an anamorphic
widescreen aspect ratio of 2.39:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1
track, lacking the detail evident in the higher def version. A UV
digital copy is also included.

While
there are many plot holes in the film's plausibility, it attempts to
tell an love story that spans two very different planets. Worth a
watch for its cast and impressive cinematography alone, The Space
Between Us isn't quite as heartfelt as it aims but isn't a total
loss either.
