The
Other Hell
(1981), also known as L'altro
inferno
or Guardian
of Hell,
is an Italian 'nun-sploitation' film that is sure to infuriate overly
religious audiences the world over, especially if it was made today.
A forgotten horror gem, the film is presented for the first time
uncut, uncensored, and remastered in HD, and has never looked or
sounded better than it does here in this new release from Severin
Films.
Directed
by Hell
of The Living Dead
mastermind Bruno Mattei (although he is credited under the name
'Stefan Oblowsky'), the film features Mattei's unique filmmaking
abilities to push the boundaries of exploitation cinema and features
plenty of gore and nudity to satisfy even the most hardcore fans of
obscure cinema.
The
Other Hell
stars Franca Stoppi, Carlo de Mejo, Francesca Carmeno, Susan Forget,
Franco Garofalo, and Paola Montenero.
A
priest investigates a nuns' convent where many ghastly things have
taken place under the ran of Mother Superior (a terrifying
performance by Franca Stoppi that is explored in greater detail in
the supplemental features) including everything from abortions to
murder, sex, and death. But there's more than just petty crime and
anti-religious activities happening in a place that should be holy, a
dark and terrifying truth is about to be uncovered in only a way that
Bruno Mattei could deliver! Full of spooky imagery such as a room
full of baby dolls hanging by their necks, green colored rooms full
of torture, to dark stone-covered passages revealing lines of skulls
and bones, The
Other Hell
will take you on a journey that few other films dare!
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and
a nice sounding, lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 track
available in dubbed English or in French and Italian with optional
subtitles. The original 35mm print of the film was discovered behind
a wall of a Bologna nunnery, and looks startlingly good due to its
age and condition and is complete with cigarette burns and some
grain. Most notable is the creative score by Goblin (Dawn
of the Dead,
Suspiria),
a band which horror fans know and love - my only complaint is that
the soundtrack wasn't available on CD to accompany the release!
Special
Features include:
Definitely
for the exploitation crowd, there's a lot to like about this new
version of The
Other Hell.
I can honestly say that I've never seen a film like this before.
