Jaco
Van Dormael's The
Brand New Testament
(2015) is an interesting religious satire from Belgium that is nicely
shot, produced and equal parts dark and funny. Not as cherry and
comedic as say Jim Carrey's Bruce
Almighty,
the film tells an interesting story of humanity's creation and how
some of the Powers That Be may not be so different from us.
God
is an abusive and alcoholic father and lousy excuse for a creator who
keeps his exceptional daughter under his thumb. When she discovers a
secret room where God does all of his work, she finds out some of the
death that he has caused and gets fed up, sending 'death dates' to
every person in the world, so that they know the exact time of their
expiration. Escaping into a drying machine that has a long tunnel
that connects to the outside world, God's Daughter ends up on a
spiritual journey of her own.
The
film stars Catherine Deneuve, Benoit Poelvoorde, and Pii Groyne to
name a few.
Presented
in standard definition DVD with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1
and a lossy French Dolby Digital 5.1 track with English subtitles,
the film looks and sounds fine for the format, but missing some of
the color clarity and detail evident in high definition and a Blu-ray
is apparently also available.

Some
spins of Christianity may offend some, so I would suggest checking
this out if you have a sense of humor on the subject.
