Diego Luna (Rogue One) sits in the Director's Chair for Mr.
Pig (2016), which features great performances by Danny Glover and
Maya Rudolph and is a character study of a father and his daughter at
the end of the man's life. The film starts out with a good bit of
energy and then starts to remain as engaging as it progresses.
Still, the performances and filmmaking are pretty strong which makes
it worth checking out.
When
Ambrose (Glover) decides to find his pet pig Howard a new home in
Mexico in exchange for a small fortune, he takes to the road in
search of living out his days in piece. But when his excessive
drinking and love for his pig friend take a toll on him, Ambrose soon
finds himself homeless and penniless. When his estranged daughter
(Rudolph) finds him in a hotel taking care of his sick pig, she soon
starts to look after him as he deteriorates - clearing up the missing
bond between the two at the end of his life.
Presented
in standard definition with an anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen aspect
ratio and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the film looks and sounds
fine for DVD, but as with any such releases that look good this way,
could benefit to a 1080p upgrade version. The color palette varies
from lush and exterior to the brown earth tones of Mexico, all of
which are cinematic and look fine.
No
extras or digital copy.
A
one timer for this reviewer, I found Mr. Pig to be more drama
than comedy and ultimately a bittersweet watch.
