Mountain (2015/First Run Features DVD)

Picture: B- Sound: B- Extras: D Film: C+

A hit with critics, Mountain (2015) explores the life of an Orthodox Jewish woman who is bored with house work and years for sexual attention. Curious to wander outside of her comfort zone, the film exposes a dark underworld that runs parallel with a bright and normal one and how living one life affects another. A bit slow paced but driving its point home, Mountain is a heavy dramatic piece with interesting directing by Yaelle Kayam.

A young Orthodox Jewish woman becomes ensconced in a nocturnal community of prostitutes and drug dealers that congregates in the ancient cemetery atop Jerusalem's Mount of Olives. The film stars Hitham Omari, Shani Klein, and Avshalom Polak.

Presented in standard definition DVD with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.77:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 Hebrew mix with English subtitles, the film looks and sounds fine on DVD with the exterior daytime shots shining a bit brighter than the night exteriors, which sometimes look a bit too dark. The film is nicely shot by Itay Marom, with a great score by Ophir Leibovitch.
