Tom
Hanks and Felicity Jones star in Ron Howard's Inferno
(2016), which is the third film in the Da
Vinci Code
series that started in 2006, now a trilogy. Again featuring Hanks as
Professor Robert Langdon and based on the book by Dan Brown, Inferno
is sharply made with great direction by Howard and strong
performances from not only the leads but co-stars Irrfan Khan, Omar
Sy, Ana Ularu, and Ben Foster. However high profile, the film was
panned by critics upon its theatrical release with many feeling the
plot was a bit too convoluted and frantic to keep up with. Though I
found it to be the best of the three Langdon films with a
frighteningly realistic threat and it still did well overseas as it
is likely to do on home video, as fans will catch up with it then.
Struck
with a nasty head wound and temporary amnesia, Professor Robert
Langdon (Hanks) is haunted by dark visions of Hell on Earth and the
Apocalypse. Pursued by many that want him dead, Langdon is soon on
the run with Dr. Sienna Brooks (Jones) as they uncover a plot to wipe
out mankind with a deadly plague that has a dark connection to
Dante's Inferno.
Felicity
Jones (Star
Wars: Rogue One)
is great in the film as she takes over the role of 'Langdon's
attractive nerdy brunette female side-kick' from Ayelet Zurer in
Angels
and Demons
and Audrey Tautou from Da
Vinci Code.
Unlike those characters though, Jones' character of Sienna is a
layered and troubled character who is a key element of Inferno's
big twist midway through the second act. Speaking of that twist,
it's a little silly and half predictable but adds to the zany premise
of the film's threat.
The
4K Ultra HD disc features a stunning 4K transfer (2160p with HDR
(high dynamic range 10-bit color) and a 1.85:1 widescreen aspect
ratio that has vibrant colors and impeccable detail that shows the
potential of both the Arri Alexa XT and the Red Epic Dragon - both of
which lensed the film. Specifically in the wide arial shots showing
the locations in Italy, you can really see the stunning clarity of
4K.
The
audio is also top of the line with both a Dolby Atmos 11.1 track (
Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) core) that bring out Hans Zimmer's
action packed score and the vast array of explosions and hyper-real
sound effects that comprise the film.
The
Blu-ray disc is also included that showcases the film in 1080p high
definition the same audio tracks that isn't as impressive as 4K, but
still up to standard. The film is quite colorful with darker night
scenes and a unique cinematic look at the foreign territories where
the film takes place.
A
digital UV copy is also included.

a classic, but a interesting adventure film full of high stakes
