Bottle Rocket (1996/Sony/Columbia/Umbrella Import Blu-ray)

Picture: B Sound: B Extras: D Film: B

PLEASE NOTE: This Import Blu-ray is now only available from our friends at Umbrella Entertainment in Australia, can play on all Blu-ray players and can be ordered from the link below.

While Wes Anderson's comedic first film Bottle Rocket (1996) isn't as good as The Royal Tennebaums or Rushmore, there's still a lot to love about the film, which features standout performances by Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson (who also wrote the screenplay with Wes Anderson), Robert Musgrave, and James Caan. This release by Umbrella Entertainment sports a nice transfer (similar to the Criterion Collection release of the same film) on Blu-ray disc and is bare bones in comparison.

Upon his release from a mental hospital following a nervous breakdown, the directionless Anthony (Luke Wilson) joins his friend Dignan (Owen Wilson), who has hatched a hare-brained scheme for an as-yet-unspecified crime spree that somehow involves his former boss, the (supposedly) legendary Mr. Henry. With the help of their pathetic neighbor and pal Bob, Anthony and Dignan pull a job and hit the road, where Anthony finds love with motel maid Inez. When our boys finally hook up with Mr. Henry, the ensuing escapade turns out to be far from what anyone expected.

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and a nice sounding DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless track, the film looks far better on Blu-ray obviously than it did when it was on DVD. Though a low budget production, Wes Anderson's impeccable style shines through. The transfer here is very similar to the Criterion Collection version which shares the same master source (you can see their logo at the beginning), but it is reported that there are some slight color differences.

Sadly, no extras on this release. You'll have to get the Criterion version for that.
