Part Requiem for a Dream, part Hills Have Eyes, Philip Brophy's Body Melt (1993) is an interesting Oz-Ploitation flick about drug addiction and the odd side effects that the drug incorporates into its suburban consumers. Smartly made with great special effects and a pulse pounding synth soundtrack, Body Melt is smartly edited and interestingly made.

Set in Pebbles Court, a deafening car crash that is everything from normal reigns down onto the peaceful town as strange tentacles erupt from the dead drivers neck and force their way down his throat. Hot on the case, Senior detective Sam Phillips (Gerard Kennedy) and his rookie partner Johnno (Andrew Daddo) link the accident to a diabolical plan to experiment on those residents with a radical new designer drug that has horrific side effects on all who consume it.

The film has several great special effects pieces as mentioned including one dealing with a pregnant woman that you won't soon forget after seeing. I definitely wouldn't suggest watching this if you have a weak stomach!

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and a lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track, both updated to the Blu-ray. Originally shot in the Super 16mm film format (with 35mm blow-up prints in mind), the film looks fantastic on disc with vibrant colors and sharp picture considering the film's lower budget.
