I
had high hopes for this black and white independent horror film, Vito
Trabucco's Never Open The Door (2014), as it starts with a fun
ode to Hitchcock and Saul Bass with an animated title sequence, but
what follows is poor dialogue and acting that makes the
micro-budgeted film a bit of a miss. Lifting elements from stronger
films such as The Evil Dead, You're Next, and The
Strangers, with a splash of The Twilight Zone, the film's
look and production design don't pack enough punch to stand the test
of time to be deemed a cult hit.
A
group of friends go for a weekend getaway in a cabin, when they a
wounded stranger intrudes on their fun and warns them 'not to open
the door.' The group start to squabble, and add lib, with each one
growing more and more curious of the man's warning and ponder what
lurks outside the cabin. Will they find out?
The
film stars Jessica Sonneborn, Deborah Venegas, Kristina Page, Matthew
Aidan, Mike Wood, and George Troester.
Presented
in 1080p black and white high definition Blu-ray with a widescreen
aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and an even, lossy Dolby Digital 2.0
(192kbps), which isn't bad for a digitally shot low budget film of
this nature. Some of the blacks could be pushed a bit further, but
the fact that the film is in black and white definitely adds to the
film.
