Greenleaf: Season One (2016/Lionsgate Blu-ray Set)

Picture: A Sound: B+ Extras: A Episodes: A-

Grace 'Gigi' Greenleaf comes home after the death of her sister Faith and comes home to her family which runs the super-mega church Calvary, headed by her father Bishop James Greenleaf. While the 'family' on the surface appears to be the perfect family, behind close doors there is sex, lies, secrets and infighting between the family and members to who controls the church in the surprising new series Greenleaf: Season One (2016).

Grace left her family 20 years ago because she couldn't stand the lies and how the Church exploits its followers for the family's self enrichment, but now, she come back to secretly expose them after the 'suicide' of her sister. Her father the Bishop and her mother are heads of the Church and will do anything to protect the continue of the Greenleaf's clan's control and their rule. Her various brothers, sisters and in-laws are all living together in their beautiful billion dollar mansion fighting for the scraps at their table. Behind their smiling faces there is jealousy, greed, lies, sin, scandals and cover ups which poisons all their relationships. The only thing binding them together is their mutual interest in the money. Meanwhile, the state is conducting an inquiry to the church's misuse of it's funds, but for those who work for the Greenleaf, they are either well paid or paid off to cover up anything that is a threat to their fortune.

There is a reason why there is a separation between church and state. Greenleaf was like a mix of a modern day The Borgias and Empire TV series, an organization run by a family on the surface appears to service the community, but behind close doors are lies, greed, sex, corruption and scandals in the best Dynasty/Dallas tradition. Lynn Whitfield and Keith David lead the cast, which may be on the verge of being the next big nighttime soap opera hit.

The 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image is another surprise, shot in HD and looking really good throughout, while even the DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless 5.1 mix on all episodes is sonically better than most shows we've been covering. The makers are serious about a grade-A quality series presentation and it shows. Extras include Oprah Winfrey Conversation, Creating Greenleaf, a Gag Reel, music sessions and trailers.
