The
Passenger (2010) is a treat for fans of classical music and opera
with stunning set and costume design and great performances as well.
This is the first staged performance of the opera in two acts, eight
scenes, and an epilogue. Opus 97 (1967-1978) and part of the Bregenz
Festival in 2010 - this is Mieczyslaw Weinberg's version. The show
is conduced by Teodor Currentzis and Stage Directed by David
Pountney.
The
opera an interplay between two levels: the upper level depicts the
deck of an ocean liner after the Second World War where a German
couple, Liese and Walter (a West German diplomat on his way with his
new wife to a new diplomatic posting), are sailing to Brazil. The
wife, Liese, thinks she recognizes a Polish woman on board, Marta, as
a former inmate of Auschwitz where she, unknown to her husband, was a
camp guard. The second lower level develops below the liner deck,
depicting the concentration camp.
The
show stars Michelle Breedt, Robert Sacca, Elend Kelessidi, Artur
Rucinski, Svetlana Doneva, Angelica Voje, and Elzbieta Wroblewska.
Presented
in 1080i high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1,
the picture and sound are pretty clear and consistent throughout with
contrast between the solid black dark background and the elaborate
set design. There is considerable detail in the costumes as well.
The audio mix is in both PCM 2.0 Stereo and an even better, lossless
DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.0 mix and multiple language tracks.
