Cartoon
Network's Adult Swim has had its fair share of hits and misses over
the years, with the largely successful Robot Chicken and
others. The idea here is to create off-beat satirical animated for
the adult crowd for those late to the party. The newest effort is a
stop motion puppet show entitled Super Mansion (from the
creators of Robot Chicken) that centers around an aging
superhero (Bryan Cranston) who is leading a falling-from-grace legion
of superheroes that get into antic after antic. But even an all-star
voice cast can't save his unfunny show with a tired spin on the
superhero genre - but the inclusion of dirty language and adult
content makes me question - exactly what audience is this show for?
Some
of the impressive celebrity guest voices include Zeb Wells,
Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Green, Chris Pine, Ron Perlman, Nick Kroll,
Matthew Senreich, and others.
This
set includes 13 uncensored episodes which consist of Groaner's
Wild, They Shoot Omega Pets, Don't They?, Let's Talk About Rex, Puss
in Books, Lex, A Midsummer Night's Ream, Brad Medicine, Unfortunate
Son, Babes in the Wood, The Inconceivable Escape of Dr. Devizo,
Lexanity, and Lex as a Weapon.
This
unrated animate feature has a decent looking standard definition
transfer with a 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio that looks
and sounds as good as it can for DVD. The colors are vibrant and the
overall quality is a close match to a HD streaming service (like
Crackle - where the show is also available to watch) or on digital
cable. The sound mix is a lossy English 5.1 Dolby Digital track,
that sounds fine for this with even levels and a nice mix.
No
extras.
I'm
a fan of adult animated shows, namely South Park, which has me in
stitches laughing even after repeat episode viewing. Being a fan of
superheroes and comics and, I feel, the target demographic they are
going for here - I found the show to be flat, unfunny, and
uninspired. The 'aging' superhero concept has been done to death and
hasn't been really explored or improved upon here.
