Chopping
Mall (1986/Vestron/Lionsgate Blu-ray)

Made
just one year before the cult classic Robocop is the eerily
similar (in some regards) 1986 Jim Wynorski film Chopping Mall.
Following the typical slasher film narrative, I found the poster to
be a bit misleading. There are no zombies in this picture but rather
killer robots! A silly and gory film that doesn't shy away from some
nudity, Chopping Mall is a relentless rip off of other better
movies with enough '80s nostalgia to make it fun to watch today. The
film stars Kelli Maroney, Barbara Crampton, Paul Bartel, Mary
Woronov, and Dick Miller to name a few. This is the first title
under the Vestron Video Collector's Series in addition to Blood
Diner (review elsewhere on this site.)
A
new mall gets a security upgrade of seemingly super efficient and
deadly robots that prove early on that they are a bit on the deadly
side. When eight teenagers get trapped in the mall and all of the
human security guards get wiped out, it's a fight for survival as the
killer robots unleash terror upon them before shouting ''Have a nice
day!''.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 -
the film looks great on Blu-ray disc even though it was shot in the
'80s on a low budget. The DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 lossless
track makes the film sound as good as it can with nothing
particularly noteworthy audio wise, but nothing to complain about
either really either.

If
you're an '80s horror fan and feel like you've seen it all, you won't
get anything particularly new from Chopping Mall, but its a
good cheeseball comedy/horror that would be fun to watch with a
couple friends. It's at least a curio.
