In
my opinion, one of the more overlooked comic film adaptations is the
1989 Dolph Lundgren starring take on Marvel's The Punisher.
Outshining the 2004 Thomas Jane version and its lousy 2008
sequel/relaunch Punisher: War Zone with Ray Stevenson, this
take is a bit more brutal, a bit more '80s and overall doesn't take
the content as seriously as the others. This great new Blu-ray
release from Umbrella features three versions of the film including
its Unrated Cut, Theatrical, and the original Work Print version
never before released.
The
Punisher also stars Louis Gossett Jr, Jeroen Krabbe (The
Fugitive), and is directed by Mark Goldblatt (editor of
Terminator and T2 among others). While nothing
groundbreaking in terms of story, the film serves as a great
revenge/thriller and popcorn muncher and is fun for comic fans to
look back on now that there has been so many reiterations of the
character.
Frank
Castle (Lundgren) is out for revenge over the death of his family at
the hands of a mob boss and will do anything it takes to punish and
kill those that killed his family. Taking the law into his own hands
and becoming the vigilante known as The Punisher, Castle cleans the
streets the only way he knows how... with bullets!
The
1080p 1.85 X 1 digital High Definition image transfers can show the
age of the materials used, but the Unrated version looks the best,
while the old analog Ultra Stereo theatrical sounds has been upgraded
to a DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0
Stereo lossless mix with Pro Logic-like surrounds that allow this to
sound as good as it ever will.
