The
2015 religious drama The Last Days in the Desert stars Ewan
McGregor as Jesus, to whom tangles with temptations from the Devil
(also played by McGregor) over the burdening souls of a troubled
family by way of 40 days of fasting and praying in the desert
wasteland. The film features beautiful cinematography by the great
Emmanuel Lubezki, sharp direction by Rodrigo Garcia (Albert Nobbs)
and also stars Tye Sheridan, Ciaran Hinds, and Eyelet Zurer.
The
film's slow moving pace may deter some, but overall the film is a
beautiful watch and features interesting music and sharp production
values that puts it a step ahead of many other religious films that
I've seen. I can imagine this benefiting greatly from a large scale
presentation on a big screen rather than the limitation of home
viewing, but still found it to be a beautiful watch - that would
specifically benefit from a high definition release.
We
are covering the standard definition DVD of the film, which is
presented in an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a
lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track that looks and sounds fine for the
format, but lacks in detail in many scenes, namely those that inspire
large desert landscapes. There is obviously more to see here.
No
extras.
An
interesting film that I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't get some
notice from the Academy, The Last Days in the Desert is a good
watch for fans of Drama or Religious-based films.
