Joe
Begos' first film, The Mind's Eye, is a new small budgeted
telekinesis/horror film that echoes the works of John Carpenter or
David Cronenberg, but ends up ultimately suffering from mediocre
acting, a dense story, and lacking special effects. Sporting a
decent soundtrack by Steve Moore (that is definitely
Carpenter-esque), the film has one too many familiar filmmaking
tropes and a plot that is very similar to James Cameron's Dark
Angel TV series, the big budgeted film Jumper, and other
films in the 'persons with special abilities that the Government is
after' genre and/or cycle.
The
film stars Graham Skipper, Lauren Ashley Carter, and John Speredakos.
Set
in 1990, Zack (Skipper) who is an on-the-run loner with telekinesis
abilities, is apprehended by police and soon discovers that his long
lost (and also supernaturally gifted) girlfriend Rachel is also being
held up in the prison. Soon, the two escape and are on the run as
the authorities are hot on their trail in an effort to somehow
control or harvest their powers for evil use.
The
film starts out with a title card that asked you to 'Play the
Film Loud' - which is certainly helped on the Blu-ray as the
presentation is fine and up to standards. Presented in 1080p high
definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and a lossless
DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track, you can see & hear why they
make the claim.

Aiming
high and ending up landing a bit low, The Mind's Eye has an
intriguing (yet familiar) premise, but a rather weak visual style
that doesn't really make it stand out.
