Aaron
Kaufman's 2016 thriller Urge sports a decent cast but ends up
falling into typical tropes that other drug-related films fall into
and ends up being almost a horror film by the time its done.
Starring Aaron Kaufman, Jerry Stahl, Ashley Greene, and (in a bit
more than a cameo) Pierce Brosnan, the film is interestingly shot,
but ends up being another predictable thriller.
Urge
is a unique new drug that frees your internal desires, lets you
escape and be whoever you want to be for one night. The only catch
is that you can only do this drug once or it changes you into a
malicious deconstructed version of your former self. When a rich
group of late 20-somethings end up in a bizarre night club (that
tries hard to be something out of a David Lynch movie but fails),
they end up taking the drug introduced to them by the night club
owner (Brosnan). Having the night of their lives but not heeding the
warnings, they stupidly keep taking the drug again and again, then
end up becoming sadistic drug addicts.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and
a lossless English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track, Urge
looks and sounds great on Blu-ray with great details in both the day
and night scenes. Also included is a digital copy.
Special
features include a Making Of featurette and a Trailer.
Lacking
of the power of better films in the genre such as Limitless or
Requiem For A Dream, Urge ends up being nothing more
than a run of the mill drug thriller with some pretty faces and a few
unique set pieces.
