Since
being old enough to watch and enjoy horror movies, I have been
waiting for an Evil Dead 4 to happen. After that
dreadful remake/'reimagining' of the original film a few years back
that totally lacked the tone of the series and years of wishy washy
talk from Bruce Campbell, Producer Robert Tapert, and
Director/Creator Sam Raimi about the future of the franchise, I began
to give up hope. Thanks to Starz!, Mr Raimi, and his talented cast
and crew, we now have a groundbreaking new horror series that not
only entertains but is faithful to its original source material in
both style and overall feel. Simply put, Ash Vs The Evil Dead:
The Complete First Season (2016) is pure magic for its fanbase.
It is almost as if someone rubbed a magic lamp and a genie bestowed
this series amongst horror geeks.
This
revival of The Evil Dead is a great mixture of horror and
tongue-in-cheek comedy (though the first entry is more of a horror
film) and here we see it with new state of the art technology and
Campbell back again on top of his game. Every episode in this first
season is gold, my only complaint is that the episodes aren't longer.
If you loved the cult classics Evil Dead 2 or Army of
Darkness (and if you haven't seen them drop what you're doing now
and watch them) then you owe it to yourself to start watching Ash
Vs The Evil Dead. Thanks to Anchor Bay, this long awaited
Blu-ray edition is finally available and packed with some great
extras and a cool lenticular slipcase cover. Groovy.
Ten
episodes span two Blu-ray discs including El Jefe, Bait, Books
From Beyond, Brujo, The Host, The Killer of Killers, Fire in the
Hole, Ashes to Ashes, Bound in Flesh, and The Dark One.
Along with Mr. Campbell, the show also stars newcomers Ray Santiago,
Dana DeLorenzo, and Jill Marie Jones, and fan favorite Lucy Lawless
(Xena) in an unforgettable and crucial role.
Another
great aspect to this debut season is the painstaking detail in the
production design that even went to the extreme of recreating the
original cabin from the first film down to the very last detail.
Campbell goes into detail on one of the commentary tracks about how
impressive it was and is on screen (seen in the last few episodes of
the season). The series has sure come a long way from its humble
independent beginnings!
Presented
in 1080p high definition and a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and
paired with a lossless Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track, this Blu-ray
experience will make you feel like you are right there in the cabin
with Ash and greatly improves on the original digital HD broadcasts.
Extras
include...

Full
of buckets of gore, gross out humor, amazing special effects, and
unique storylines - Ash vs the Evil Dead will leave you
clamoring for Season 2 - which premieres suitably around
Halloween season. For me, this is one of my most anticipated
releases of the year.
