A Hologram For The King (2016/Lionsgate Blu-ray)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: B Film: C+

From Writer/Director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and based on the book by Dave Eggers, A Hologram For The King (2016) is a easy going comedy/drama starring Tom Hanks about one man's journey to a foreign country, for an important business meeting that goes awry and on the way discovers himself. The film boasts great cinematography, relatable characters, and a solid performance from Hanks. Starting out with an ode to beloved '80s band The Talking Heads, the film tends to be drag a bit in its second act but packs a punch in its intro and outro that will specifically appeal to older audiences. The film also stars Alexander Black and Sarita Choudhury.

Hanks stars as Alan Clay, a divorced American businessman who journeys to Saudi Arabia to present an impressive new hologram communication display to the King. However, once he arrives to meet his team of technicians, nothing goes as planned and he ends up being a major fish out of water. Soon, he crosses paths with a lovable cab driver (Black) and falls for an attractive Doctor (Choudhury) who both push his life in unexpected directions. At the same time he struggles with his own personal problems including being separated from his 21-year-old daughter, a mysterious lump on his back, and problems professionally.

Presented on Blu-ray in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a sharp sounding, lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, the film looks and sounds fantastic with details specifically in the exotic location of Saudi Arabia. Also included is an UltraViolet copy for your smartphone or tablet.

Not a classic but a solid enjoyable film, A Hologram for the King has good filmmaking all around and throws a life lesson or two in there for the older crowd.
