Green Room (2015/Lionsgate Blu-ray)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: C Film: B

One of the most talked about films in the thriller/horror genre this year finally lands on disc with a great transfer and some interesting extras. A big hit in Cannes and with critics and audiences, Green Room (2015) is a nail biting movie experience directed by Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin) and starring Patrick Stewart (like you've never seen him before), Anton Yelchin (in sadly, one of his final roles), Imogen Poots (Knight of Cups), and Alia Shawkat (Night Moves).

When four punk rock friends (Yelchin, Shawkat, Joe Cole and Callum Turner) travel with their punk band to Portland to play at a Neo-Nazi Skinhead bar, they end up witnesses to a murder and are trapped within the venue's green room along with a host of unfriendly characters. As the stakes raise, they are unwillingly introduced to the fierce owner of the club named Darcy (Stewart) who seeks to efficiently eliminate them.

Considering its modest budget, the smartly made film looks and sounds fantastic with several very cinematic moments and convincing special effects. Even if you're not a big horror fan, I would definitely suggest giving this one a watch. The film is also very realistic - as this is something that could actually happen and would most likely play out just like it does here, which adds to the overall tension of the piece. I could see some inspiration from the works of David Fincher or Nicholas Winding Refn, as it has that same sort of dark and disturbing tone they are known for.

The sudden death of actor Anton Yelchin is a real loss to the film community as he really proved in this film (as many rimes before) that he had a great talent as a dramatic actor and was really improving more and more with each film that he took on. At least he made this mark with a few interesting projects such as this one that we as moviegoers will no doubt look back on fondly for years to come. We will get a chance to see him on the silver screen once again in this summer upcoming Star Trek Beyond, which has been dedicated to the late actor.

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.39:1 and a lossless English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track, the film looks and sounds stunning on Blu-ray disc that leaves little to complain about. The film has an interesting color palette to some darkly lit interiors that have great contrast and are rich in detail. An UltraViolet (that some might call UltraViolent) digital copy of the film is also included.

Special Features:

Audio Commentary with Director Jeremy Saulnier

Into the Pit: Making Green Room Featurette

A fantastic film that is a must see for fans of dark cinema, Yelchin's work is just the first reason to see it.
