Girl With A Suitcase

It is hard to tell from this DVD copy, but Valerio
Zurlini’s Girl With A Suitcase (1960) looks like a winning film with a
winning performance by Claudia Cardinale, best known later for what was the
female lead in Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In The West (1968,
reviewed elsewhere on this site). She
falls in love with a man her age, then when he turns out to be an oaf, she
becomes even more interested in his 16-year-old brother!
The tale has even a few more twists, but it was hard to
follow on this not-so-hot English-dub-only copy with an extremely muddy
monochrome transfer of a print done in the analog video era decades
before. It is a tunnel vision copy to boot,
so what looks like fine camerawork is buried in this sad copy of the film. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono does not fare
much better, especially with this awful, aged dubbing. At least on lesser import Spaghetti
Westerns, it would be fun. There are no
extras really, and this is a copy to skip.
We will compare to the Ivy DVD edition when we return.
