Mr.
Right (2015/Universal Blu-ray)
Picture:
B+ Sound: B+ Extras: D Film: C
Mr.
Right is a new romantic comedy/action film that stars Anna
Kendrick (Up In The Air), Tim Roth (The Hateful Eight),
and Sam Rockwell (The Way Way Back). The film tries really
hard to be funny and romantic but ultimately becomes derivative of
other films of its kind and feels a bit stale and silly. Strong from
a production standpoint and boasting a good soundtrack, however, Mr.
Right is a step above most straight to video rom-coms but doesn't
offer up anything fresh or new in the genre.
Martha
Agatha (Kendrick) gets her heart broken when she comes face to face
with her cheating boyfriend and goes into a short lived alcoholic
depression that even her two best friends can't seem to get her out
of. This soon changes when she has a chance encounter at a store
named Frances (Rockwell) whose a sharp shooting professional assassin
that can somehow move so fast at times that things appear slow.
Killing
the woman who hired him to kill her husband, Frances finds several
other killers hot on this trail all the while he is courting Martha,
who is unbeknownst at first to the situation. As the love blooms and
he ends up killing more and more men that are on a mission to kill
him, including an FBI Agent from his past (Roth) resulting in an
explosive climax, Frances has to choose the best way to come clean to
Martha, all the while helping her unlock her own true potential.
Mr.
Right also stars Anson Mount, James Ransone, and the RZA. While
I am usually a fan of Anna Kendrick, she's a little too bubbly and
over top in this film and comes across as annoying more than
charming. Much of the dialogue feels ad-libbed here and not as
effective as it has been in other recent comedies such as Dirty
Grandpa. Roth and Rockwell are pretty much playing their usual
roles and some of the action (including several slow motion
sequences) are a little corny.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and
a lossless, English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that looks and
sounds fantastic. Also included is the UltraViolet Copy of the film
for your smart phone or tablet.
The
only extra on the disc is A Sweet Couple, a look at the film's
stars.
Mr.
Right is a one time watch romantic comedy with a little bit of
action and a few funny tidbits. All in all, the script feels very
formulaic and average if not subpar performances by usual on point
actors such as Anna Kendrick and Rockwell, seem to mostly be phoning
it in here.
