The
Wonder Years comes back to DVD with this collection of the show's
Fifth Season. The series, if you do not know, is a coming of
age comedy/drama based in 'normal life' America in the late '60s and
stars Fred Savage as the main character Kevin Arnold, who is getting
a little bit older as he starts in high school this season, along
with co-stars David Schwimmer, Jason Hervey, Josh Saviano, Danica
McKellar, Alley Mills, Dan Lauria, Daniel Stern and Olivia D'Abo.
For
six seasons, Years captured the angst of growing up in
suburban middle-class America in the late '60s, as seen through the
life and times of Kevin Arnold (Savage). Audiences eagerly followed
his evolution as a typical teenager who remembered every moment of
his transition from childhood with excruciating detail and remarkable
hindsight.
The
show's biggest highlight is its incredible hits song soundtrack
(which the owners finally got clearance for, to issue the show on
DVD) featuring nearly three dozen songs by The Archies, Frankie
Avalon, The Turtles, and Van Morrison to name a few, all in which
reflect the era. From a production standpoint this season really
stands out.
While
this collection does span four discs, runs around 721 minutes in
length, and features some interesting extras, I was very disappointed
with the standard definition transfer, which almost looks as if it
was a VHS presentation. The colors are noisy and the sound is a weak,
lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono track. I would've thought some
remastering would have been done before releasing this on disc, I
mean even for DVD this is pretty bad.
Extras
include
-
That's a Wrap! Mark B. Perry's Farewell Set Tour Season 5
-
Featurette: Will You Love Me Tomorrow, The Wonder Years' Love
Stories
-
Interviews with: Olivia D'Abo (Karen Arnold) and David Schwimmer
(Michael)
If
you grew up with the show or are a big fan, then you will want to
grab up this edition. Don't expect a stellar transfer, however. It
may be best to wait until the eventual Blu-ray update, though there
is a gift set of the entire series you can also get sat this link...
