Regression
(2015) is a great looking film cinematically as directed by Alejando
Amenabar, who also directed the Nicole Kidman supernatural thriller
The Others some years ago. Here, we have Ethan Hawke, David
Thewlis, Aaron Ashmore, and Emma Watson (in a role I'm surprised she
took.) The film is heavy on drama and channeling the 'regression' of
a despicable act and while boasting this interesting cast and strong
cinematic look, ultimately feels like a rehash of several other films
on a similar subject.
The
film takes place in Minnesota, 1990, where we meet hardened Detective
Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) is investigating the case of a tormented
young woman named Angela (Emma Watson), who accuses her father, John
Gray (David Dencik), of an life affecting crime. Out of nowhere, her
Father admits guilt and its up to renowned psychologist Dr. Raines
(David Thewlis) to help him relive his memories to solve the grisly
crime.
The
film looks great on disc in a sharp 1080p high definition transfer
with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.39:1 and a powerful, lossless
English-DTS HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track that does not disappoint
those listening for impact, sounding clean and clear throughout the
presentation. There is also a Digital Copy of the film for your
smart phone or tablet.
Extras
include

Hawke - Bruce's Obsession
Emma
Watson - The Complexity of Angela

Vision of Regression
Similar
to other films of its kind like Identity, Regression
isn't a terrible film but one that feels like we've seen it before.
Worthy of checking out for its great performances by Hawke and Watson
alone, though.
