Don
Rickles was a holds-no-barred tour de force of comedy. Captured
beautifully in the NBC-produced mid-1970s sitcom, CPO
Sharkey
stars Rickles as U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Otto Sharkey, an
abrasive, sharp-tongued veteran in charge of a company of new
recruits on a San Diego naval base. The show also starred Peter
Isacksen, Elizabeth Allen, Harrison Page, and Richard X. Slattery.
Specializing
at being a hard ass and keeping his men on their toes, Sharkey is
still a good guy underneath who ends up helping out his comrades as a
true friend. Though a little dated, the show still has a lot of
charm and Rickles is always fun to watch. (The first season was
elsewhere on this site.)
This
disc from Time Life captures six highlight episodes of the second
season including The
New Captain, Sharkey Flies Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Close Encounters
of the Worst Kind, Captain's Right Hand Man, Fear of Flying,
and The
Used-Car Caper.
Total run time is 144 minutes.
The
DVD standard definition transfer is below average with this release.
Most every shot looks in soft focus, flesh tones are pale, and
there's no detail to behold at all as the NTSC analog video is only
is so-so shape. It is presented in its original 1.33:1 full frame as
originally broadcast and captured here in a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0
stereo track. No extras on the release either.
Though
the show is charming and fun to watch, I was expecting more out of
the transfer here. Even for DVD and standard definition, that's
pretty low.
