When
Sara discovers her twin sister is missing, she journeys all the way
to Japan to search for her in her last known location. However, it
is in Japan's haunted woods known for suicides and angry ghosts. As
she enters deeper into the forest, ignoring the signs and warnings,
she may enter... but will the spirits let her go?
In
Jason Zada's The Forest (2016), Sara and her twin sister have
always been like night and day. While identical sisters, Sara has
always been the good girl and Jess has been the girl in trouble. But
when Jess goes missing Sara believes she is still alive. She
journeys to Mt. Fuji and enters a forbidden woods where it is said
that the yurei/angry ghosts uses a person's worst fears and guilt to
make them commit suicide. However, the longer she remains in the
woods she begins seeing things that aren't there and she suspects the
man she is with is a psycho killer.
This was a story of an
American in a Japanese ghost story. It made use of Japanese ghost
story telling, i.e., that it is more scary if you can't see anything,
every shadow looks like a body and never look behind you. In the end
reality burrs for the character, are they in the real world or
spiritual world ....or is it all in their mind? And for those who
survive... they see something that shouldn't of have, but nobody will
believe them!
The
1080p 1.85 X 1 digital High Definition image is remarkable and horror
fans will like it and liken it to other Japanese horror cinema, as
well as recent Universal horror releases like Crimson Peak, so
expect solid playback, while the lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio)
5.1 mix is still really good, professional & consistent, if not
in the class of the image. Extras include Exploring the Forest,
a stills gallery, story boards, commentary and trailers.
