Minnie
(Bel Powley) is a young girl who just had sex; a young 15-year-old
girl growing up circa 1976 in the San Francisco Bay area with her
sister (Abigail Wait) and hippie mother (Kristen Wiig of Nasty
Baby), who has decided to have an affair with her mother's
boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard) 'the handsomest man in the
world'. As she quickly grows and blossoms to womanhood she learns
about sex and sexuality she likes how it makes her feel. After all,
what her mother doesn't know can't hurt her ...right? She wants to
grow up to be a 'free woman', learning how to use 'sex' and get what
she wants, she continues to experiment recording her 'experiences' in
her drawings and diary daily ...until her mother finds her diary in
Mirielle Heller's The Diary Of A Teenage Girl (2015).
Minnie,
after watching her mother have countless affairs and late night wild
parties, decides she would like to become a woman herself, thus
starting by seducing her mother's current boyfriend Monroe. He
doesn't object to having sex with her as long as she can keep it a
secret from her mother, but quickly, Minnie becomes a nympho and
likes how by using sex she can have control or the power use men to
get what she wants. She loves the feeling of others desiring/needing
her. As she continues to experiment with her body with various other
partners and drugs, she begins to blur the line in if she is using
others or if others are using her. It's her body and she can do
anything she wants with it, and she wants everything. But this
arrangement can not last, so where will it lead for all?
This
was a coming of age story about a young girl as she discovers sex and
the pleasures of her maturing young body. Insecure at first, she
uses sex to raise her self esteem, but then later she likes what
others would do for her to either have sex with her again or to keep
quiet about it. What she thinks of her being in control, in reality
was more 'sure, why not have sex with an under-aged kid'. But sooner
or later, the truth has a way of coming out ...but she would be the
last who realizes it.
The
1080p 2.35 X 1 digital High Definition image (shot with a Red Epic HD
camera) and lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless 5.1 mix are
just fine for a dialogue-driven film like this with its share of
music, but don't expect anything groundbreaking or spectacular.
Extras include Deleted Scenes, Marielle's Journey: Bring the Diary to
Life, Q & A with Bel Powley, Alexander Skarsgard & the
Director, a feature-length Audio Commentary with cast and trailers.
