Director
Noah Baumbach returns with Mistress
America
(2015), a charming New York City-based comedy starring Greta Gerwig
(who co-wrote the script with Baumbach) and in many ways attempts to
be something of a Woody Allen movie. Co-starring in the film is Lola
Kirke, Seth Barrish, Michael Chernus, and Cindy Cheung.
Tracy
(Lola Kirke) is a lonely college freshman in New York, having neither
the exciting university experience nor the glamorous metropolitan
lifestyle she envisioned. But when she is taken in by her soon-to-be
stepsister, Brooke (Greta Gerwig) - a resident of Times Square and
adventurous gal about town - she is rescued from her disappointment
and seduced by Brooke's alluringly mad schemes.
What
works in the film is Greta Gerwig, who is a modern day Annie Hall as
in she's the coolest of the cool and if you don't fall in love with
her midpoint in this film, then you might want to have your pulse
checked. Some parts of the film drag but all in all, it's a light
comedy about friendship and admiration with a little dash of the
'revenge on your exes' sub genre.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and
a nice sounding DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless 5.1 track, the film
looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-ray disc. Extras are a little
light and typical EPK that include promotional featurettes, gallery,
and a theatrical trailer.
All
in all, this is a fun little movie that you can safely watch on a
date.
