Mississippi
Grind (2015) is a fun film starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben
Mendelsohn that reinvigorates the gambling and addiction/buddy/road
trip genres and makes them fresh again. Also starring Sienna Miller
and Analeigh Tipton. This film (whose title reminds one of Robert
Altman's California Split) was definitely looked over this
past year by audiences, though garnered high praise from critics.
Gerry
is a talented poker player, but his gambling habit is getting the
best of him. One day, he meets a charismatic young traveler named
Curtis. Deeming Curtis his lucky charm, Gerry convinces him that
they should hit the road together. As they gamble their way down
South toward a legendary high-stakes poker game in New Orleans, the
trip's highs and lows unveil the duo's true character and motivation,
and an undeniable bond forms between them.
The
film is also really good at capturing the Southern feel with its
wonderful blues soundtrack that really adds to the cinematic
atmosphere of the film.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and
a crystal clear DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless 5.1 track, the film
looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-ray disc. A digital copy is also
included.
Extras
include Two of a Kind: On The Road with Mississippi Grind.
Definitely
worth checking out for the great filmmaking and performances alone.
