Green
Inferno: The Director's Cut
(2015/Universal Blu-ray)

In
tradition of Cannibal films of the 1970's such as Cannibal
Holocaust
and Cannibal
Ferox,
director Eli Roth brings a updated vision to the genre that is brutal
and gut wrenching whilst at the same time formulaic and a bit too
cleanly produced to achieve the saw raw feel of those old films,
which was so effective and made some question whether they were real
or not.
Green
Inferno
(2015) stars Roth's real life wife Lorenza Izzo (who was also in its
current film Knock
Knock,
reviewed elsewhere on this site), Ariel Levy, Daryl Sabara, Sky
Ferreira, and Kirby Bliss Banton.
The
film was originally made in 2013 but went through many battles over
the extremity of its content and the shifting to a few different
studios. It finally found a limited theatrical release last
Halloween and is now brought to us by Universal in top notch scale.
While the film was blasted by critics, I found it to be some of Eli
Roth's better work and fun ride.
New
York college student Justine (Lorenza Izzo), a lawyer's daughter,
meets a student activist named Alejandro (Ariel Levy) when he goes on
a hunger strike on behalf of underpaid janitors. Smitten, Justine
agrees to help Alejandro undertake his next project: to save the
Amazon. She soon learns to regret her decision when their plane
crashes in the Peruvian jungle and she and the rest of their group
are taken captive by a tribe of hungry cannibals.
Green
Inferno
isn't without its shocking moments that will no doubt please fans of
gore. In that aspect the film succeeds at being realistic and
gruesome, with a few moments that definitely wouldn't fly for an R
rating. From early on in the story, its pretty clear who is going to
get taken out and who will survive. What displeased me the most was
the confusing last few scenes of the film, where a surviving
character crafts an incorrect story of what happened on the island.
Perhaps its aim to anger the audience but for me it just left me
scratching my head.
Presented
in crisp 1080p 2.35 X 1 high definition image and a lossless, strong
DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track, the film looks and sounds perfect
on the Blu-ray format with extreme detail in the production design
and look of the film. Scenes on the island are beautifully
photographed with lush greens, while later scenes when we encounter
the tribe pop with red paint they color themselves in crafting a
superb cinematic image against the backdrop. Universal has done it
again with a great presentation to no doubt help you show off your
home entertainment system.
A
digital copy of the film is also included if you like to watch your
gruesome cannibal movies on the go or on your tablet to hide from
your spouse.
Extras
are a little light but include a feature length audio commentary
track with Co-Writer/Director/Producer Eli Roth, Producer Nicolas
Lopez, and stars Lorenza Izzo, Aaron Burns, Kirby Bliss Blanton, and
Daryl Sabara and a Photo Gallery.
All
in all, if you like extreme gore and/or cannibal films then you
should check this one out. If you are squeamish then you may want to
avoid because a few scenes may make you lose your lunch.
