A
wacky and interesting underground film, Forbidden
Zone
(1980) is directed by Richard Elfman with music by the famed film
composer Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo. Also available on Blu-ray,
this film comes with two discs each offering a different version of
the film. One is in color and the other black and white, which makes
for a profoundly different cinematic experience. The film stars
Herve Villechaise (Fantasy
Island)
and Susan Tyrell (Fat
City, Cry-Baby)
and features appearances by Warhol Superstar Viva, Joe Spinell and
The Kipper Kids.
The
story of Forbidden
Zone involves
an alternate universe accessed through a door in the house of the
Hercules family. The film was originally shot to showcase the Mystic
Knights of the band Oingo Boingo some a bizarre twist that's part a
play and part experimental filmmaking. Now it is a cult film with a
growing status via several of its participants.
Presented
in standard definition with an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of
1.85:1 and paired with a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the film
looks and sounds fine on DVD but will surely benefit from the Blu-ray
version.
Extras
include...
Audio
commentary with director Richard Elfman and writer-actor Matthew
