Jake
Schreier's Paper Towns is a coming of age film that touches on
some of the same themes as the classic film The Graduate such
as the end of the high school era and teenagers coming to realize
that adulthood has finally come. While the film is well made with a
decent young cast including rising star Cara Delevingne and Nat
Wolff, I was a little disappointed with the second and third acts
after what I felt was a strong opening. It also reminded me a bit of
the film Garden State with the theme of 'letting loose' and
living life to the fullest but lacks the charm and strong soundtrack
from that film.
From
John Green, the author of Fault In Our Stars, Quentin Jacobsen
(Wolff) has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous
Margo Roth Spiegelman (Delevingne) from afar. So when she cracks
open a window and climbs back into his life-dressed like a ninja and
summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge on fellow
classmates - he follows. After their all-nighter ends and a new day
breaks without a kiss, Quentin arrives at school to discover that
Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery and completely
vanished. But Quentin soon learns that there are clues-and they're
for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the
less Q sees of the girl he thought he knew.
The
high definition presentation here is top notch with a sharp 1080p
presentation in widescreen (shot with Arri Alexa HD cameras) with an
aspect ratio of 2:40:1 and a lossless, powerful English DTS-HD MA
(Master Audio) 5.1 track that doesn't disappoint. Also on the disc
are French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. An Ultraviolet Copy
also included.
Included
also is a standard definition DVD copy of the film with an anamorphic
aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track that looks
and sounds fine for the format but doesn't match the DVD.
The
disc is packed with extras including:

Paper
Towns
isn't necessarily a bad film but its bittersweet tone may be a turn
off for some.
