Yves
Saint Laurent was considered one of the greatest fashion brands of
the 20th Century, but who was he and how did he became a worldwide
phenomenon? Often the road to success, while glorious is filled with
vices, vultures and the vicious, days are filled with colorful dress
and nights are filled with drugs, sex, and alcohol in Bohemia. Saint
Laurent became a fashion icon, a brand for the rich and wealthy, but
unfortunately, he was surrounded by toadies and those who wished to
bleed him dry. Once he became the top fashion designer, all they
really cared was about the brand name instead of comfort and afford
ability. In order to keep Yves creating and happy they drowned him
in a sea of drugs, alcohol and sex. And while he was a professional
with his work, at night he was a Hedonist with no limits, all of
which lead to his eventual breakdown and fall.
Bertrand
Bonello's Saint Laurent (2014) is about the fashion industry
of the '60s and '70s of what people considered 'haute couture' and a
perfect example of false brand advertisement. Riding on the wave of
fame all they had to do is convince the public that their brand is
always the best and top of the line, all they had to do was slap
their brand name on it (with an expensive price tag), even if it was
trash. At first, the story seemed interesting but then it became
completely boring, it kept jumping back and forth between young and
old Yves as if trying to explain he was senile, and even all the
nudity, music and fashion could not keep it interesting (odd,
considering the same man directed The Pornographer (2001),
reviewed elsewhere on this site).
The
1080p 1.85 X 1 digital high definition image does at least look
really good throughout with a consistent look and the DTS-HD MA
(Master Audio) lossless 5.1 mix is well-recorded with a solid
soundfield throughout. Extras include directer and cast discussing
Yves Saint Laurent, making of the film and trailers.
