IFC
presents Steven Belber's Match - an interesting comedy
starring Patrick Stewart, Carla Gugino (Watchmen), and Matthew
Lillard (Scream), all of whom play very well together in this
film, which is an adaptation of director Belber's own Tony
Award-nominated play.
In
Match, Stewart stars as Tobi who is an eccentric, pot-smoking
Manhattan ballet instructor whose quiet, yet highly successful life
is interrupted by the arrival of a young couple (Gugino &
Lillard) from Seattle, presumably there to interview him about his
colorful life as a dancer in the 1960s. As Tobi spins salacious
tales from his former career, an ulterior motive for the couple's
visit emerges, forcing the trio to confront a secret that may connect
or disconnect them all.
The
film plays with some interesting themes including abandoned
parenthood, the importance of one's career over personal life, and
the basic message of living life to the fullest. I would be
surprised if this was overlooked during Awards season, as the twist
ending at the climax of the film is fantastic and really brings
together an ending that is both positive and slightly dramatic.
Presented
in standard definition with an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of
2.40:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the film looks great on
DVD for the format, but would guess it would look even better on
Blu-ray disc. Subtitles are also included on the disc in English and
Spanish.
Sadly,
the only extra on the disc is a Trailer. Interviews or a Featurette
would have been great to accompany this film on disc.
