House
on the Hill
takes on a thrilling rollercoaster of fear and suspense. It is
apparently based on a true story about serial killers from San
Francisco named Leonard Lake and Charles Ng, who enjoyed videoing
everything. This movie does not try and make the serial killers
glorified so we feel for them later; they decide to focus on making
it scary for the audience experiencing the movie.
What
House
on the Hill
did was try and create a movie that still incorporated the videos
that Lake and Ng made over time with their victims, confessionals,
and construction of their dungeon like room. That is one reason why
you will notice that the cinematography is lacking in some areas.
They tried making the rest of it seem like it flowed together in
portions, but you are able to tell. It is still creepy to see the
actual serial killer Lake speak in the House
on the Hill
and also to realize that, even though what you are seeing take place
is violent, you know whatever actually happened must have been so
much worse.
The
sound (in lossy Dolby Digital sound here) with the serial killers
actually speaking has very low quality, obviously, but the rest of
the film sounds like they had a semi-decent microphone either on the
camera they were holding or maybe a close boom, but again, it felt
like they were trying to use this to their advantage and make it feel
like real found footage.
Unfortunately,
the movie felt like it was one of those Forensic Files or some other
cop drama reenactment. Keep in mind, the footage is still eerie and
the movie itself can be shocking and disturbing at times and some
people are very much into this kind of stuff.
There
are no extras.
