The
Witches Of East End: Season 2
(2014/Fox DVD)
Picture:
B- Sound: B- Extras: D Episodes: C-
Obviously
geared at teens and fans of horror soap operas like Twilight,
Vampire Diaries,
and even that awful Teen
Wolf
show, The
Witches of East End
is full of super models cosplaying as Vampires and being fully aware
that the camera is on them at all times. It's as if the writers were
inspired by The
Craft,
Greek Mythology, and Hocus
Pocus but
wanted to package something in the 'tween' package. The show stars
Julia Ormond, Madchen Amick, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Rachel Boston, Daniel
Di Tomasso, and Eric Winter.
With
story overtones similar to Dark
Shadows,
but never as poignant, the story centers on the Beauchamp family,
where in season one sisters Freya and Ingrid discovered they are
witches with ancient magical powers. With the help of their mother
Joanna and Aunt Wendy, they learned how to cultivate their craft and
work together to defeat unearthly enemies seeking revenge on their
family, while keeping their abilities a secret from the town.
The
13-episode season features shows entitled A
Moveable Beast, The Son Also Rises, The Old Man and the Key, The
Brothers Grimoire, Boogie Knights, When a Mandragora Loves a Woman,
Art of Darkness, Sex, Lies and a Birthday Cake, The Fall of the House
of Beauchamp, Poe Way Out, Box to the Future, and From Whom The Spell
Tolls... pretty
bad puns if you ask me. I guess the 'movie title' riff was their
motif for the season.
Plot
wise in the second season, one week after the portal to Asgard
opened, Joanna is still struggling with Athena's poison. Freya
worries about Killian's well being, but he turns up alive kissing a
mysterious and beautiful woman named Eva. Ingrid develops a strange
sleep walking habit and ends up feeding a beast. Wendy meets a guy
at the library and they share close encounters. The season is based
loosely on the book of the same name by author Melissa de la Cruz.
Presented
in standard definition with an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of
1.78:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track. The show could
definitely benefit from an HD upgrade but it doesn't look awful on
DVD. No extras.
