Alan
Parker's Mississippi Burning (1988) is an intense character
study and a beautiful, if highly controversial for being accused of
revisionist history, piece of filmmaking. Starring Gene Hackman and
Willem Dafoe as you've never seen them, this is another excellent
edition to the Twilight Time library, a company that continues to
release lesser known cult films or prestige with incredible bonus
features and transfers that rival the Criterion Collection.
When
a group of civil rights workers goes missing in a small Mississippi
town, FBI agents Alan Ward (Willem Dafoe) and Rupert Anderson (Gene
Hackman) are sent in to investigate. Local authorities refuse to
cooperate with them, and the African American community is afraid to,
precipitating a clash between the two agents over strategy. As the
situation becomes more volatile, the direct approach is abandoned in
favor of more aggressive, hard-line tactics.
While
primarily a study of racism, the film has some an excellent cast of
characters that you almost feel like they are real people. Every
aspect of the Southern City is so intimately displayed here that is
feels in many ways like a huge inspiration to HBO's True
Detective. The film is well acted with a good script and
message, and if you haven't seen it and are a fan of crime/thrillers
then this isn't one you want to miss, especially looking and sounding
and great as it does... which brings us to...
The
transfer and sound. Twilight Time again delivers a beautiful looking
transfer here with the film presented in 1080p high definition with a
1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio with only minor detail issues and a
lossless English 2.0 DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) Stereo mix with Pro
Logic surrounds (true to its original advanced Dolby SR (Spectral
Recording) analog theatrical sound release) which best captures the
audio quality of the originally recorded elements of the film.
Extras
include An Isolated Score Track, older Audio Commentary with Alan
Parker and the Original Theatrical Trailer.
