I
knew from the moment Leviathan (2014) started and the music of
Philip Glass sounded off, that I was in for an epic treat and I was
not disappointed. The latest drama from Andrey Zvyagintsev, the
acclaimed director of The Return is this Oscar nominated film.
Beautifully shot and edited with exhilarating performances, this
film is a must see for any fan of dramatic or foreign cinema. The
film stars Aleksei Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, and Vladimir
Vdovichenkov.
Kolya
(Alexeï Serebriakov) lives in a small fishing town near the stunning
Barents Sea in Northern Russia. He owns an auto-repair shop that
stands right next to the house where he lives with his young wife
Lilya (Elena Liadova) and his son Roma (Sergueï Pokhodaev) from a
previous marriage.
The
main focuses story wise of the film involve fate, power, and money
and that is demonstrated in the film by dealing with some of the more
contemporary political social issues of contemporary Russia, while
never quite becoming an artist's sermon or a public statement. The
filmmakers in interviews state that the film is mainly about love.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and
a lossless, Russian 5.1 DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) track, the film
looks and sounds fantastic. Also included on the disc is an
English-Audio Description Track, French (PAR) 5.1 Dolby Digital track
and subtitles in English, French, and English SDH.
Extras
include Blu-ray exclusive features: Deleted Scenes, Toronto
International Film Festival Q&A with Director Audrey Zvyagintsev
and additional extras including Commentary with the Director and
Producer, and a Making Of documentary.
