Some
are blessed.
Others
are possessed.
Joe
Marino's The Vatican Exorcisms (2013) is a pretty creepy
little picture for what it is and maybe even a tad better than it
should be. The special effects aren't terrible and the premise,
while familiar, crafts an R-rated tale that is definitely better than
the tired Exorcism of Emily Rose and other recent
Exorcism-type films. Keeping a documentary-type feel, the
film has some convinces moments that feel real as well as some
interesting faux interviews to help support the story.
A
highly effective found-footage film, The Vatican Exorcisms was
shot by Joe Marino, an American filmmaker who went to Italy to shed
light on the phenomenon of exorcisms. Accompanied by Padre Luigi, a
true exorcist, Joe travels to the south of Italy, a place where the
sacred and profane have always lived together, where Christian
rituals are inextricably linked to the pagan ones.
The
film is presented on DVD in standard definition with an anamorphic
widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1
track. For the style that the film aims for, it looks fine on DVD
but as with anything would look sharper on Blu-ray.
The
only extras are a Trailer and Photo Gallery.
If
you're a big fan of these types of films and have been a little bored
lately with what has been coming out, then I would suggest giving
this film a try. It's not a masterpiece but at least offers some
creepy moments and decent filmmaking to boot.
