Devil May Call (2013/Lionsgate DVD)

Picture: B- Sound: B- Extras: B- Film: C+

Tyler Mane has become a major horror player over the years after his recent outing as Michael Myers in Rob Zombie's Halloween films. Now, he's back as a serial killer again in Devil May Call - a lackluster slasher flick directed by Jason Cuadrado and also starring Traci Lords (Blade) - who no doubt holds the film down with her terrible acting.

Blind telephone counselor Sam (Corri English) is leaving. Volunteering to train new employee Jess (Van Hansis), Sam joins skeleton crew Val (Lords) and Jules (Tracy Perez) for one last night on the phones. They're expecting a quiet night. But John (Tyler Mane), a serial killer and one of Sam's regular callers, is upset at Sam's leaving and feels betrayed. Seeking revenge, John knocks out the power to the building and begins tearing the office to pieces. Terror ensues.

While Mane has some moments in this, ultimately it feels like slasher retread that's targeted mostly towards a teen audience with no nudity and violence that is pretty tame. Had they took the gore to the next level this could have at least live on as an underground horror entry.

The presentation on the disc is fine for DVD with a standard definition transfer and an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital track.

Extras include a Director's Commentary, Monstrous By Nature short film by Jason Cuadrado, Composing the Score with Nicholas Pike, and a Trailer Gallery. Not bad for a DVD release nowadays in terms of extras.
