Digging
Up The Marrow
is a mockumentary film by horror filmmaker Adam Green (Frozen,
Hatchet)
that puts the writer/actor/director in the lead role. The premise is
that Green and his film crew begin a documentary exploring genre
based monster art that takes an odd turn when the filmmakers are
contacted by a man who claims he can prove that monsters are indeed
real.
In
an attempt to sell the realism of the film, Green acts against his
wife and friends as well as we get some big name horror cameos
including: Mick Garris, Tony Todd, Kane Hodder, and Lloyd Kaufman.
The highlight of the film, however is Ray Wise who plays William
Dekker, who is the one who attempts to expose the Monsterous entities
and seems to always have a second agenda full of secrets.
The
film is convincing and has a pretty startling finish but you can't
help of wonder if the film was made up primarily as it went along.
The monsters and premise are reminiscent of Clive Barker's Nightbreed
in a sense but the real horror director playing himself concept is
reminiscent of Wes Craven's New
Nightmare.
It seems like half of the film, however, is Green trying to convince
others (and maybe even himself) that what is happening is real and
others doubting him. After a while, it almost becomes redundant.
Sound
and Picture on the disc is superb with a 1080p high definition
transfer with a Widescreen 1.78:1 aspect ratio and a strong, lossless
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track and subtitles in English SDH. Extras
include Extended and Deleted Scenes, Monsters of the Marrow, Audio
Commentary by Green and others, and more.
If
you are an Adam Green fan then I would definitely suggest watching
this. Otherwise, its hit and miss.
