My
father has stated in the past that his favorite superhero was
Aquaman. While I grew up idolizing and dressing up as Batman, my
father loved Aquaman...
I
was at a loss. 'What?!
You like that orange and green fish guy?! Lame...'
To
each their own; and whereas Aquaman had a fishy past (pun intended);
there is no telling what revisiting the character could lead to in
the future. Here in 2015, both kids and adults alike worship Robert
Downey Jr's portrayal and reinventing of Iron Man; something that no
one would have expected.
Sad
to say, however, Justice
League: Throne of Atlantis
is not Aquaman's breakthrough performance here on Blu-ray; and
whereas the Justice League part is awesome, the Aquaman man part...
not so much.
Aquaman
was noticeably absent from last year's Justice
League: War
and since (traditionally) Aquaman was a founding member, this was
odd. With the coming of Justice
League: Throne of Atlantis
audiences are delivered a new origin tale for our underwater hero
Aquaman (voiced by Matt Lanter). It is a tale that explores the
dynamics of The Justice League while giving us a taste of what is to
come with Aquaman. It is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green
Lantern who are the shining stars here (again). The inner workings
of the Justice League and those relationships are what make this film
sustainable; Aquaman seems to be an afterthought or subplot of that.
The
technical features here on the Justice
League: Throne of Atlantis Blu-ray
are similar to other recent releases from the DC direct to home video
line. The picture is presented in a 1080p, AVC Encoded MPEG-4, 1.78
X 1 that has an adequate image quality; but also has an inconsistent
image that appears soft/hazy, as the creators added some 'underwater'
filter to give it a washed appearance. Overall, this was a bad
choice. The sound is somewhat better in its 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio
track; like previous releases presenting a crisp, clean dialogue and
solid use of the surrounds for both panning effects and ambient
noises. This may even be somewhat of an upgrade from Justice
League: War.
The
DVD is a downgrade in quality of the Blu-ray release.
