Tyler Perry's 'Madea's Tough Love' (2014/Lionsgate DVD)

Picture: C Sound: C Extras: C Main Program: C+

Madea is back in her first animated movie. After too many run-ins with the John-Q-Laws and po-po, Medea is sentenced to do community service in her old neighbor to help clean up and 'straighten out' the unruly kids in the hood. And while the law, the streets, and these kids are tough, there is nothing as tough as Medea's tough love in Tyler Perry's 'Madea's Tough Love' (2014).

As we know, Madea can face cops, gangsters and mobsters but she faces her toughest challenge yet: teaching kids. As Madea tries to teach a bunch of street kids manors, the kids rather just play and they soon prove to be just as tricky as Madea herself, but when a when a crooked politician threatens to destroy the community center where the kids live, can Madea and the kids work together to win the city wide Sports Day prize money to save their beloved building?

People just love something about African American old ladies (even when it is men disguised as them), as they are large and in charge. Madea is the just your average no nonsense, smart talking, wise cracking, tough as nails grandma who often have their own brand of justice, hers. This animated film reminded me of the old 1970s/1980s style animation such as Fat Albert or Scooby Doo, likely by design as Perry loves referencing pop culture from the period.

The simplicity of the anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image and lossy Dolby Digital sound are a but weak as a result in combination, but extras include Medea gets animated featurette, Madea's Storyboard Comparison and trailers.
