If
you are not familiar with the works of Alejandro Jodorowsky, he made
such '70s classics like El
Topo
and The
Holy Mountain
which arguably redefined cinema as both art and entertainment. While
his films aren't for everyone, they are definitely great filmmaking
and noteworthy films worthy of your attention. This film, Santa
Sangre
is very interesting and is divided into both a flashback and a
flash-forward.
A
young man is confined in a mental hospital. Through a flashback we
see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were
circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother,
a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa
Sangre
(Holy Blood), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, he
escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother. Against his
will, he becomes her arms and the two undertake a grisly campaign of
murder and revenge.
Severin
has done a pretty good job with the sound and transfer on the disc
(as well as the DVD format allows) with a standard definition
anamorphic transfer with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and
three different audio tracks in lossy English Dolby 2.0, Spanish 2.0,
and Italian 2.0. Closed Captioning is also on the disc.
Extras
on the disc aren't too shabby and include Audio
Commentary with Jodorowsky and Journalist Alan Jones, Deleted Scenes
With Director Commentary, Theatrical Trailer, and a Japanese Trailer.
It has also been issued on Blu-ray, which you can read more about at
