Supernatural: The Complete Ninth Season (2013 - 2014/Warner Blu-ray set)

Picture: B Sound: B Extras: B Episodes: C

Supernatural continues in this four-disc-23-episode collection featuring new exciting episodes from the hit series from CW and Warner. While the digital effects can at times be cheesy and some of the acting iffy, the show succeeds in low budget creativity and offers some decent plot twist that make it a step above other yawns such as The Vampire Diaries. For those of you who haven't seen the show, it centers around Sam Winchester who grew up hunting unearthly horrors. But now, law school and a normal life beckon until Sam's estranged brother Dean appears with troubling news: their father has disappeared, a man who's hunted evil for 22 years. So to find their father, the brothers must hunt what he hunts... and Sam must return to the life he'd rather leave behind.

The season picks up with Sam Winchester (star Jared Padalecki) - who is dying from the events of the previous season. He dreams that he's talking with his brother Dean (star Jensen Ackles), who is trying to convince him to fight to live, and their late friend Bobby Singer (guest star Jim Beaver), who is trying to convince him to let go and die. All of this occurs after an Angelic horde has descended down onto the Earth. With the angelic Host's descent to Earth, Sam and Dean now face a world inhabited by thousands of powerful beings, each with its own chaotic agenda. Before tackling the threat of the loose nukes roaming the globe, the Winchesters engage in their most personal conflict yet. Meanwhile, Castiel finds he's more vulnerable and yet capable of more humanity than ever before. As the threat escalades, a way must be found to reopen the gates of Heaven and head off a demon insurrection in Hell. Throughout, darkness leaves its mark on Dean: has he final crossed the line to protect his family?

Here are a list of the episodes contained in this set:

I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here, Devil May Care, I'm No Angel, Slumber Party, Dog Dean Afternoon, Heaven Can't Wait, Bad Boys, Rock and a Hard Place, Mother's Little Helper, Meta Fiction, Alex Annie Alexis Ann, Bloodlines, King of the Damned, Stairway to Heaven, and Do You Believe in Miracles?

The sound and picture are the disc are both pretty well put together featuring a 1080p high definition transfer with a 1.78:1 widescreen aspect ratio and a powerful, lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 track that sounds better than the show did on television in its original broadcast. There's also a Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0 track on the disc (but it doesn't compare obviously to the DTS Mix.) There are also subtitles in English SDH, French and Spanish.

Total Run Time for this set is 967 minutes. The extras on this release are pretty decent with 3 Episode Commentaries, The Men of Letters Interactive Set Experience, Behind the Scenes of Supernatural, 2013 Comic-Con Panel, Unaired Scenes, and a Gag Reel.

All in all, though I didn't get into the show previously it's not that bad. If you are itching for a new show to get into or if you want to get back into the show now may not be a bad time to get into Supernatural. From what I hear fans saying about the show, this is the best season yet. Thanks to Warner, we have excellent releases like these to get our appetites whet.
