How
much is underground?... apparently a lot under the major city of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From natural caverns, old coal mines, to
even the subway, there is a lot of things underground we take for
granted. This film takes you on a journey on the various underground
structures and terrain. While it focus on important underground
structures such as sewers and water treatment, it also shows some
important underground history, mainly the coal mines that once was
here and what people can do with these hollow caverns now.
The
WQED-produced Underground Pittsburgh (QED is their major
public television station) was a very interesting film, while the
topic was all about underground things, the subject matter kept on
changing from one thing to another. From people's personal cellars,
mushroom mines, Pittsburgh tunnels, to one of the world's largest
data storage facilities underground. It show how much we relied on
things underground and maybe even possibilities for the future.
This
was an interesting mix of subject, science and history. While it was
interesting, it seem like it could of been made for a show like Mr.
Rogers' Neighborhood. I would recommend this film for anyone who
live in Pittsburgh, it will take you to a few places unknown to even
it's citizens.
The
1.33 X 1 image and lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo are good, but
uneven. Extras includes more footage and stories from other
underground places in Pittsburgh and promotional material.
