Saving General Yang (2013/Well Go USA Blu-ray)

Picture: A- Sound: B Extras: C Film: A-

General Yang (Adam Cheng) is trapped behind enemy lines, now his seven sons are tasked with bring him home against an army of thousands. Taught with the honor and skills to survive, they will risk it all to bring their father home. The mission of coming home alive is the dream of every soldier, but to bring another home, a father, a brother what will it cost?

Ronnie Yu's Saving General Yang (2013) sends the title character off to war, but then is left behind by his commander without any hope of rescue. Betrayed by his own commander, he fights not only enemy soldiers but a political war against a rival family who cares more about their position that winning the war. On hearing their fathers situation, seven son set off to rescue him and bring him home. As they journey home one by one the brothers sacrifice their lives to slow the army chasing them to bring their father home and the story gets more involved from there.

This is an epic Chinese warfare movie, based on a folklore story it teaches the meaning of filial piety and the meaning of sacrifice. It is story of ultimate sacrifices, each son or character represented different virtues and weapon skill, and all of them were one man armies. With each fallen brother they took dozens of enemy soldiers with them, ultimately helping the final brother return home. As long as someone survived then the rest had died with honor. Terrific!

The 1080p 2.35 X 1 digital High Definition image transfer comes from a RED EPIC camera shoot and looks pretty impressive throughout as the makers (from Director of Photography Chi Ying Chan to the digital animators and artists) pull together a very consistent and impressive image throughout. The DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless mix is really impressive, if not always as much as the image, but the mix is fine, though some dialogue could have been clearer. Extras include making of the film, interviews with director and cast, and trailers.
