Many films have fed off of the success of 1999’s The
Blair Witch Project, setting up their casts as documentarians
seeking the truth and stumbling upon some horror no one ever expected. In many cases, these faux documentaries fail
to deliver the goods, but that’s not the case with Troll Hunter. Director Andre Ovredal introduces us to a a
group of college filmmakers looking to land a story about bear poachers and
killings in the Norwegian wilderness.
They soon run into much more than they bargained for as they meet and
subsequently follow Hans, a grizzled, modern-day troll hunter.
After seeing some strange, but still not unexplainable
phenomena, the group trails Hans as he conducts a troll hunt and runs headlong
into an encounter with a giant, menacing, two-headed troll! Here’s where the payoff comes in, as the
student filmmakers get the entire encounter on film, the audience gets to see
the monster, and the solid use of CGI provides excellent visuals.
It turns out that vicious encounter caught on film is just
another day at the office for the gruff but ultimately amiable Hans. He agrees
to allow the crew to follow him on subsequent hunts. They soon find a deeper mystery afoot, as
Hans informs them that the trolls are roaming beyond their normally set
territories. The rest of the film
involves stopping the rampaging trolls and discovering the reasons behind their
wanderings.
Loaded with deleted scense, bloopers, extended scenes, and
featurettes, the Troll Hunter Blu-Ray delivers great value for fans of the
film and folks interested in this particular flavor of horror/fantasy
thriller.
