Nothing
gets my goat like false advertising and when Slayers Premium, a recent Animé DVD arrived, it seemed
strange. It was not filled with
episodes, but was not a feature film, though it is treated as a “feature” in
the menu. It is only 30 minutes,
something the box claims, while NOT claiming it is a feature. Either way, even at 30 minutes, it was a wreck.
It throws
in everything but an Animé-styled kitchen sink (or is that kitsch-en),
including odd aliens and even odder, more obnoxious humans. It is everything we have seen before and the
voice actors sound overly familiar, having worked on far better projects we
have covered on the site. It is a TV
show, but why only one episode?
Either
way, it is based on a book series which has to be more coherent than this, but
30 minutes of my life (plus the few extras that included trailers, behind the
scenes and audio commentary that was also pointless) was loss enough. The image is anamorphically enhanced at 1.78
X 1 and both the English & Japanese tracks are in Dolby Digital 5.1 AC-3,
but this is a case where monophonic sound would have been a welcome relief. The picture is a disappointment for
anamorphic enhancement, but so is this DVD, so only those with a morbid
curiosity for the moronic should apply.
